Essential Oil Spotlight: Petitgrain

I am super excited to dive into petitgrain essential oil today… one of my recent favorites! I actually really started working with this oil over the last few months and it’s become a quick favorite- and there are a few reasons why. Firstly, let’s start with the beauty of the orange tree… specifically the Citrus aurantium var. Amara species, or the bitter orange tree. The bitter orange tree is native to areas such as China and northeastern India, and is also cultivated in Italy, Tunisia, Morocco, West Africa, Spain, and Paraguay.

From the bitter orange tree, we obtain orange essential oil from the ripe fruits, neroli essential oil (arguably one of the most beautiful scents on earth, and by far one of the most expensive essential oils) from the orange blossoms, and petitgrain essential oil from leaves and twigs. Bitter orange essential oil is most often extracted through expression (cold pressing the rhinds), while neroli & petitgrain are extracted through steam distillation. Petitgrain has an aroma slightly resembling neroli, with a less floral, and more woody, green, earthy tone.

Due to its pleasant and fresh aroma, petitgrain is a common ingredient in perfumes & colognes, soaps, and even flavoring for beverages. Petitgrain is a wonderful essential oil to consider for its uplifting, soothing, and stress / anxiety reducing purposes. Interestingly enough, all three of the essential oils obtained from the bitter orange tree, are often used for their antidepressant and mood boosting effect.

Consider using & blending petitgrain essential oil for:

Soothing Anxiety… with other oils such as lavender, neroli, clary sage, orange, cypress, frankincense

Bedtime ritual combinations… patchouli, lavender, orange, bergamot, mandarin, ylang ylang, roman chamomile

Most recently, I featured petitgrain in a meditative rollerball alongside Frankincense, myrrh, bergamot, lavender, and Purple Hawaiian Haze hemp flower essential oils. (The cannabis essential oils are an entire story in themselves, but check out this instagram post to learn a little more about them)!
