Essential Oil Spotlight: GINGER!
For centuries, ginger root has held an important role in Traditional Chinese & ancient medicine. The versatility of this powerful rhizome makes for a potent ingredient in food & beverages such as tea or juice, as well as through herbal compresses, pills, and topical applications. If you have ever had a cold, or experienced that winter chill that just won’t go away... well there is nothing like a hot cup of ginger tea to warm the soul!
Historically, ginger root and specifically ginger tea has been used for issues relating to the digestive system... including nausea, vomiting, stomach ache, excess gas / bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. Ginger is well known to “kindle the digestive fire” that exists in all of us, and lacks in many! The qualities of ginger which make it beneficial to stomach and digestive issues include anti-inflammatory, carminative (relieves flatulence), antispasmodic, and analgesic (pain relieving.)
These same qualities make Ginger essential oil equally beneficial for the musculoskeletal system. The anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of ginger oil offer a solution for physical discomfort via dermal application. Our Muscle Soothing Salve is a wonderful example of this, and is ideal to be applied to general areas of discomfort / sore muscles, inflammation, and for post workout applications. Being a warming oil which helps to stimulate blood flow, ginger can be very beneficial to cold, stiff conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, and conditions where there is a lack of circulation, for instance Raynaud's syndrome. Back to that cold winter day… ginger just has an undeniable quality to provide warmth!
Emotionally, ginger is a very grounding oil. It can help reconnect us to our roots, to our direction and drive. Ginger oil works wonders with promoting mental clarity, maintaining focus, and increasing motivation. Additionally, ginger is known to be an aphrodisiac, and can help to relieve sexual and emotional anxieties of oneself. (Use within a perfume application to pulse points, or diffuse oil into your daily environment… try blending with sweet orange, clove, or your favorite floral oil!)
